We support impact litigation that promote democratic values, protect human rights, and challenge the influence of authoritarian regimes.

The North River Legal Fund was founded by Times Wang and Ti-Anna Wang. It is named after the Chinese prison where their father, Wang Bingzhang, served the first decade of his life sentence for his pioneering work in Chinese pro-democracy activism.

The North River Legal Fund is also inspired by their profession. Times and Ti-Anna are both practicing lawyers. They believe that creative litigation is an important and an effective tool to protect and support dissidents, hold institutions accountable for complicity with oppressive governments, and counter transnational repression.

Chinese calligraphy by Wang Bingzhang from before he was imprisoned. The Chinese proverb translates to: “I know there are tigers in the mountain. And still towards the mountain I go.”
